Sports Physicals and Echocardiograms
Methodist Mansfield’s physicians and nurses are volunteering their time during the months of April, May, and June to help Mansfield ISD, Midlothian ISD, and South Grand Prairie High School athletes get a healthy start on the upcoming sports season. The hospital and several local doctors teamed with athletic district officials to offer sports physicals and echocardiograms. The sports physicals were led by Jeff McDaniel, MD, sports medicine family health physician and Juan Gavalda, MD, family health physician on the medical staff at Methodist Mansfield.
Cardiologists Alan Taylor, MD, and Levi Rice, DO, performed the echocardiograms. An echocardiogram is a test in which ultrasound is used to examine the heart to help detect abnormalities and/or other cardiovascular conditions that may affect student athletes. Student athletes must sign a release form and be accompanied by a parent for this non-invasive test.
“This was an incredible opportunity for our student athletes to have a quality physical exam,” said Mansfield ISD Athletic Director Philip O’Neal. “The generous donation of time and equipment from Methodist Mansfield and local physicians was superb and we appreciate their service to our athletes and district.”
The Methodist Mansfield sports physicals and echocardiogram community outreach program was honored with both a 2018 Fort Worth Business Press Healthcare Hero Award and a 2017 D CEO Excellence in Healthcare Award.
